Poem in My Pocket: “Wild Nights — Wild Nights!” by Emily Dickinson

According to the Academy of American Poets, today is the annual Poem in Your Pocket Day (which is nicely sandwiched in the middle of National Poetry Month). This is when millions of people throughout the United States will carry poems in their pockets and share them with others.

For today, my “Poem in My Pocket” is “Wild Nights — Wild Nights!” by Emily Dickinson:

Wild Nights – Wild Nights!

Wild Nights – Wild Nights!
Were I with thee
Wild Nights should be
Our luxury!

Futile – the winds –
To a heart in port –
Done with the compass –
Done with the chart!

Rowing in Eden –
Ah, the sea!
Might I but moor – Tonight –
In thee!

— Emily Dickinson
